The BBC and the Great British Bake Off

I don't watch the show as competitive cooking is one step up from monkey tennis but how does the BBC build up a show from nothing to something watched by 14m and then be left with nothing once it is successful

I understand that the BBC is obliged to use outside production companies for a proportion of its output but surely it has some financial asset or continuing interest once it succeeds as per Top Gear.
They at least own the rights to sell the format around the world don't they or does that all go to the production company too?

For me the MOTD analysis is a massive problem. Sometimes they spend more time prattling on stating the bleeding obvious than actually showing football.
But if they insist on having former players tell us what we've just seen, then can they please get rid of the terminally boring Murphy and Shearer, and bring in someone who actually has a personality and doesn't trot out the usual tired old cliches.

And does Lineker really get paid £1.8mill for a part time job? 10% of that, and he'd still be overpaid.

The bbc can't win on this, those who don't watch the show will ask how spending that much on a show about baking is justified, those who do will question why they pay a license fee yet their favourite show gets "binned" (albeit to c4 which they can watch anyway).

Well norms obviously shit in the kitchen, as everyone likes some good old fashioned cake.

It's a harmless programme and one of the only ones where I'll happily watch it with the missus without banishing her to the bedroom to watch it.

BTW, everyone saying "who gives a shit" is blinkered. It's not about fucking Baking shows. It's about BBC's role, an emblematic of current change - carefully timed to coincide with Govt review in the BBC's charter and actions.

Which, personally, I care about. Because I (and you) pay for, without being asked about.

I disagree. I actually think the analysis on MOTD is very good. I do think they over-egg it and it can often be bias to blg clubs / players.

But when they show certain things off the ball like movement and how teams set up I think you can learn a lot about the pro game. Especially when they are analysing good play from your team. I like that.

Just my opinion though.

I rather like the Great British Bake off. I like it when they help each other.
They tried it in the states but they were too aggressive to make it work.

Also they did not have the adorable Sue Perkins

They do not need ANY panel. Did Brian Moore have one, did Jim Rosenthal on midweek sport special? Very rarely.

If I ever watch MotD, I record it. Then forward the 'analysis' as its usually so inane or focussing way too much on how great *insert top four player is*

Football is overanalysed as it is, and gives birth to a whole host of 'commuter train football bores' who quote shearer or whoever verbatim on a Monday morning work journey. Usually a Leighton buzzard 'tard who talks about man utd as 'we'

Paying fortunes to the likes of Linekar and Shearer make absolutely no sense. They could shave 20 minutes off the running time of Match of the Day, have no presented and no analysts and they'd still get the same audience. People don't watch match of the day to get Shearers opinion, people watch it for the football

The sooner they realise that, the better

Apart from things like Wimbledon & the World Cup which are on the protected list the BBC is never going to be able to afford most top level sport again.
I'd happily personally go through their budget if they like and reckon I could save 10's of millions. The salaries of people like Lineker and Graham Norton would be the first easy savings.

As a taxpayer and licence fee payer I'd hope they would start up another BAKING show with Mel & Sue & probably the other hosts and compete with the Ch4 version.
Can call it the Great British Fuck Off if they like.

Hang on, this is the opportunity for Bake Off to move to the next level, yes it'll have to sell out its core values and what made it great and the shape of it will change forever but moving from its current home is too good to turn down.

Anyone dissenting should fuck off and watch Masterchef, you weren't proper Bake Off fans in the first place.
